LANGLEY MILL train station could be left without toilet facilities after a spate of vandalism at the nearest public conveniences on Milnhay Road.
Amber Valley Borough Council has already spent £50,000 refurbishing the toilets and £20,000 repairing them following vandalism.

Now the authority has asked Aldercar and Langley Mill Parish Council to take responsibility for them because it has another repair bill – this time for £10,000.

But the parish says it doesn’t have the expense planned into its budget and has refused to take on responsibility for the public conveniences.

Peter Carney, the council’s chief executive said: “The council hasn’t decided to close them for good.

“We hoped more local management could have solved the problem but I understand the parish council has declined that.

“The decision will now go to a full council meeting to decide the future of the site – but it is costing a lot of money at the moment.”

Sheena Trower, the parish council clerk, said: “The toilets are currently the responsibility of Amber Valley Borough Council.

“They wanted our council to take them over otherwise they would be closed.

DRIVERS breaking the law in Langley Mill and Heanor have been targeted as part of a police campaign using a specialist number plate recognition system.
The aim of the scheme was to track down people driving stolen vehicles or without documents such as insurance or MoT.

The initiative, which is part of a national campaign, saw 27 vehicles being stopped and the drivers reported for a number of document offences.

A JCB digger which was stolen from Hall Road in Langley Mill on March 20 and a Citroen Xsara were recovered and six people were arrested for various vehicle related offences.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Police said: 'Officers, together with the South Derbyshire Automatic Number Plate Recognition intercept team patrolled the area of Heanor and Langley Mill.

'This was a co-ordinated operation to reduce crime and disorder in the local area, deter travelling criminals and provide a safer environment for the residents of Heanor and Langley Mill.'

Following on from the success of the campaign the police will be running similar operations in the future."

About Facts Net: "In 1956 I was returning from Langley Mill, it was night time. I decided to cut across the fields. I intended to head for the pathway between the two pit hills leading towards Peacock Town. I came across a sunken garden and not wishing to climb up the high field behind it, I cut across it. To my surprise I found a brick-arched entrance staring me in the face. It was approximately 20 feet wide, by 15 feet high. The entrance was not visible from the nearest of the two houses, because of overgrown vegetation.
I told my friends about that entrance and the four of us decided to pay it a visit. There was rubble in front of it and it was covered with weeds, obviously no one had been here in quite a while. We entered the brick-lined tunnel which was about 20 feet wide, 150 feet long and 20 feet high. The tunnel got increasingly narrower as you got near the end. On our left was a high wall, separating what looked like several old stables. At the end, the tunnel had dribbled down to about 12 feet wide and 10 feet high, still giving us plenty of room to walk in an upright position. High stacks of rotting wood were everywhere. We rested, then looked around. We shone our cycle lamp around the area and noticed a low tunnel entrance on our right, but we would have to crawl through it. It was obvious that mining had taken place here. We didn�t get very far become we came across a rock barrier. We couldn�t move it so we had to give up but decided to come back in a couple of days with hand tools to try and get past the barrier"

Forgotten Place Names: "The Puzzle or Packman's Puzzle was the name given to the collection of streets off North Street, Langley Mill, which includes West Street, Orchard Street, Regent Street and Hampden Street. This is one of the oldest residential parts of Langley Mill, these small terraced houses being developed from the 1860's onwards. Prior to being given street names, each row of houses had its own name, such as Williamson's Row, Taylor's Row and Erewash Row.
How the area became known as Packman's Puzzle is open to discussion - one theory is that the numbering of the properties in this mass of terraced houses was so confusing for door-to-door salesmen (packmen). A related explanation (which was passed to us by a former resident) is that when the packman appeared in the area, each house would signal next door by banging on the wall, and the packman was puzzled as everyone knew he was there before he even reached their house. Since the term packman could be used for anyone going door-to-door, including debt-collectors, another possibility was that the packman was confused as to why nobody was ever in when he visited (using the same signalling system as mentioned!)
In the 1880's, the Criterion Hotel, a temperance establishment, was opened on West Street, but does not appear to lasted twenty years. It had been planned to extend the residential area across the other side of North Street, and reference has been found to a proposed East Street, but this never materialised, and that side of the road became totally industrialised."

Jim Allen the owner of the Boxing Club highlighted the need to improve the facilities for the young boxers who considered the club to be the ideal place to 'hang out' and learn new skills.

AN OPENCAST site in Langley Mill is one step closer to getting the go
ahead, after being approved by Amber Valley Borough Council.

The 6.12 hectare (15.12 acre) site off Hall Road in Langley Mill has
been derelict for many years and was formerly used as an office and
soil stocking area for the Brinsley Wharf opencast site in the 1980s.

The opencast work to extract 13,500 tonnes of material will only take
25 weeks to complete and will be followed by five years worth of
beneficial restoration work.

This will include the restoration of 230 metres of the Cromford Canal;
the removal of a derelict road embankment; the formation of a
dedicated wildlife reserve; improved river corridors to encourage
wildlife; the formation of a riverside walk; provisions for a marina;
and additional boat moorings.

Amber Valley Borough Council had no objections to the scheme at their
planning meeting on Tuesday October 7.

In their initial recommendation they stated: 'The short time scale of
extracting the coal is outweighed by the ultimate long term benefits
of subsequent restoration.'

At the planning meeting, Amber Valley Councillor for Langley Mill and
Aldercar Jo Ward, said: 'I am totally for this work to be done and to
have other amenities for Langley Mill.'

The application by Shires Developments Ltd is subject to noise and
dust conditions. These will be monitored by Amber Valley Borough
Council.

The extraction of the coal will see approximately ten loaded HGV's

Langley Mill: "Mention of Langley Mill and its history will bring to many people's minds a picture of an industrial village par excellence. Although the village of today appears to remain a thriving concern, many of the household names of the past have now disappeared and have been replaced with smaller industrial concerns, employing less people and being more responsive to the employment and economic climate of today.
The names G.R.Turner, Pickersgill & Frost, Lovatt's, Aristoc and Vic Hallam remain only in people's memory, but to many they help paint a picture of a bygone industrial age when the village provided employment to many in the area.
Until the onset of the turnpikes and the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century, the area which was to become Langley Mill was simply a crossing place on the River Erewash, with links to Derby, Heanor, Eastwood, Mansfield and Nottingham. A road to Codnor Castle had used the old wooden bridge since the 12th century, but there were very few houses in the area, and the majority of these were farmsteads.
Although there had been a water mill in the area since Domesday times, it was the Canal Age which initiated the development of the industrial village which later became known as Langley Mill."

The Aim of the Project
To work towards delivering sustainable FIT4U sessions in Langley Mill.

The Objectives
To run two mobile gym sessions at The Bridge Centre in Langley Mill on Thursdays 9.30am-10.30am and 10.45am-11.45am.
To work towards making the gym sustainable. The initial trial period will run until the end of March 2006.
To encourage people who are not currently exercising to attend the sessions and to promote FIT4U in the community and to local community groups in Langley Mill.
To work with Langley Mill Parish Council to gain more funding, if necessary, to subsidise the cost of the gym.
Produce an evaluation report for Amber Valley PCT and Langley Mill and Aldercar Parish Council by May 1st 2006.
Link in with local services of potential interest / benefit to the group.

The target group
People in the Langley Mill area who are currently inactive and would benefit from a weekly exercise session. The sessions are for the general population and are not aimed specifically at people with long term conditions. However, there will be people attending the sessions will have particular medical needs."

Langley Mill is a small town in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire. It is very close to the border with Nottinghamshire, and runs into the towns of Aldercar (to the north) and Heanor (to the south). Across the River Erewash is the Nottinghamshire town of Eastwood. It is part of the Aldercar and Langley Mill parish.
Originally titled Long Lea, Langley Mill was a major employer throughout the mid 1900's with many companies including The Flour Mill, Langley Mill Pottery, Aristoc & Co Ltd and Vic Hallam Limited.
Aristoc & Co Limited on North Street became a target for German Bombers during World War 2 ... Originally a manufacturer of Silk Stockings, Aristoc manufactured Parachutes for the war effort..
International Super Bike champion Ron Haslam hailed from Langley Mill. He won many titles in the 1970's and early 80's on the international Motorcycle scene pitting his natural talents against major stars including Barry Sheene.
Langley itself is in the Heanor and Loscoe parish, just to the south.
The town is the site of Langley Mill railway station, on the Midland Main Line."
